Car Rental Launceston Downtown

Tasmania is situated just off the coast of mainland Australia. Home to just over 500,000 people, this island attracts thousands of visitors each year. Launceston is located in the north of the state, and is one of Australia’s oldest cities, with well-preserved Victorian and Colonial architecture located throughout.

The weather here is mild; a warm and temperate climate with above-average rainfall. Be sure to bring a sense of adventure and some waterproof clothing while on your vacation as you’ll likely not want to miss any exploring for a lack of preparedness for the rain.

Since you’re booking with Launceston Downtown Dollar ahead of your vacation here, you’ll be all ready to go from the moment you arrive. We hope you make the most of your visit and enjoy your time here in Launceston and Tasmania.

Cataract Gorge and More

There’s plenty to see and discover while in Launceston.

One of the main attractions is a natural phenomenon called Cataract Gorge. Located just a 15-minute walk from the city centre, Cataract Gorge is the perfect break from the hustle and bustle of the main city. It features the world’s longest single-span chairlift at 308 metres long with spectacular views over the natural ancient rock gorge. We thoroughly recommend taking out some time in your day for this ten-minute ride.

Underneath the chairlift is a playground of hikes, swimming, and natural beauty. Cataract Gorge Reserve is situated on the River Esk. Divided into two distinct areas, you’ll have plenty of fun exploring the reserve over the course of an afternoon. Take some time to swim by the First Basin, which is on the southern side of the gorge. Or stroll the Gliff Grounds and take in this beautiful Victorian garden - it’s a great spot for lunch, too.

Of course, there’s plenty to do and see while in the city itself, too. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is a fantastic way to learn about the culture and history of north Tasmania. With works that have been collected since 1842, it contains pieces from all over the world and is proudly on display all year round.

While here, pay a visit to the Launceston Planetarium, where you’ll witness live tours of the night sky after one of their designated informational shows. Learn about the birth of planet earth, black holes, and the cosmos while on your visit. Tickets can be purchased ahead of your visit.

Journeys from Launceston Downtown

The north of Tasmania is spectacularly beautiful; wild and rugged landscapes captivate all who visit. One of the most popular attractions is Cradle Mountain, which is a two-hour drive from the city of Launceston. You can get here by taking the National Highway 1 and B12. Expect the drive to be simply beautiful through the thick forests that surround the Tasmanian landscape.

Cradle Mountain is an iconic landmark that is in the heart of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area; featuring ancient rainforests, glacial lakes, snow-covered mountain peaks, and deep river gorges, it’s a destination you won’t forget in a hurry. We recommend taking your time while here, and maybe staying a night or two - there are plenty of hikes to complete and places to uncover.

Launceston is a northern Tasmanian gem that will be the perfect vacation spot. Choose to explore the city or venture further afield to the wild landscapes that Tasmania is famous for; however you choose to spend your time here, it will be spectacular. We look forward to welcoming you here soon, at Launceston Downtown Dollar.
