Australia is the gateway to some incredible wildlife that would remain otherwise unseen without a visit to this island nation. Townsville is no different, which is probably why you are looking to spend your next vacation here. The gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, this North Queensland city is somewhat still a hidden gem to many international tourists. However, you can be ready to see one of the seven wonders of the natural world with Dollar Townsville Airport.
You’re likely to feel tired and jet-lagged after your flight to Townsville airport. Enjoy peace of mind when you arrive knowing your Dollar rental is already sorted, you can quickly drive off to your vacation home or stay. Perhaps spend your first afternoon strolling through the City or to The Strand - with 320 sunshine-filled days per year, it’s likely the day you arrive will be blissfully sunny.
Townsville has an unusual climate for its location. Typically, it is in a tropical climate, however, it experiences a lot less rainfall than its neighbouring regions. So, be sure to enjoy the endless sunshine as you drive off in your Dollar rental. You’ll be thankful you took the time to rent a car before arriving here, as it simply means you’ll have more time soaking in the beautiful surroundings of Townsville, the nearby Magnetic Island, and the Great Barrier Reef.
Many people visit Townsville to use it as a central hub while exploring the nearby islands. Just off the coast of Townsville is Magnetic Island and Hinchinbrook Island.
Magnetic Island is the better known of the two, thanks to its famed Forts Walk, where you can learn about the Australian defences, forts, and infrastructure that line the coast. The Australian military occupied the Forts from 1943 until 1945. Keep an eye out for a wild koala as you hike up to the top of the walk, as they tend to be nestled amongst the trees.
If you’d prefer to see Koalas in a more personal setting, then pay a visit to the Bungalow Bay Koala Village. Here, you can take one of the wildlife tours that operate in the park, and learn about native Australian animals, including koalas, wombats, and pythons. Head off to the beach after your tour, as there are some spectacular ones on the island - while you can pick any and have a beautiful time, Florence Bay, Horseshoe Bay, Radical Bay and Arthur Bay are all sensational spots.
Hinchinbrook Island is a well-hidden gem and a nature lover’s delight. With only 40 visitors allowed on the island at any given time, it is a well-protected island that boasts a beautifully rugged landscape. If you can manage to book a visit while you’re here, be sure to check out the natural infinity pool at Zoe Falls.
Of course, you may wish to stay local to the city itself, and you’ll have a great time doing just that. Just a 40-minute drive from Townsville is Paluma Range National Park, which is a World Heritage Wet Tropic landscape. Enjoy all the waterfalls that Paluma Range has to offer, like Jourama Falls, Birthday Creek Falls, Ethel Creek Falls, Triple Falls, or Diorite Falls! Make it back in time to enjoy the sunset from the top of Castle Hill. Just metres short of mountain status, this 268-metre high hill will give you 360-degree views of Townsville City.
Townsville is in a prime location to explore one of the seven wonders of the natural world, the Great Barrier Reef. It’s one of the primary reasons that many choose to stay in Townsville.
While here, book one of the many day trips available to explore the world's largest reef system. With an average price of $200 AUD, it’s certainly a fair price to explore the famous underwater realm that many don’t have the chance to see in their lifetime.
Townsville is full of natural wonder and beauty. Take in all that this North Queensland has to offer while exploring in your Dollar rental.
