Road Trips with Dollar

Easily one of the most popular road trips from Launceston is to Cradle Mountain. Reaching 1,545 metres above sea level, Cradle Mountain is a spectacular sight for visitors all year round. Named after its resemblance to a gold mining cradle, it’s also a unique way to commemorate the mining history in Tasmania.

Cradle Mountain has four named summits: Cradle Mountain, Smithies Peak which is 1,527 metres high, Weindorfers Tower, at 1459 metres high, and Little Horn which is 1,355 metres above sea level. All four peaks tower above the ground below, so take it all in if you try the Dove Lake walk.

Cradle Mountain is located in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, an area of unique and wildly rugged natural beauty. In fact, it is an iconic landmark situated at the core of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

This national park also demonstrates three glacial stages that have taken place over the past 2-million years. This fascinating piece of geological history is also shown by the nearby Lake St Clair, which is the largest freshwater lake in Australia; the two formations give evidence to its formation.

You can easily get to Cradle Mountain from Launceston via the National Highway 1 and B12. Be sure to take in all the wild nature as you venture here - it’s breathtaking.
