Turquoise waves gently kissing white sands, schools of fish darting through crystal waters, the jaw-dropping sight of the Whale Shark and mighty Humpback. These are just a sampling of what’s on offer at Exmouth, Western Australia.

Unlike its British namesake, this stunning, underpopulated gulf on Western Australia’s north-western coast is home to a trove of coveted experiences just waiting to be undertaken by those willing to step beyond the boundaries of a ‘normal’ Aussie vacation. With the state capital over a thousand kilometres south, you may find having a hire car to be advantageous in this remote area of WA.

Exmouth has a plethora of unique experiences in a region largely untouched by industry, which may leave you feeling like you’ve stepped back in time. Swim from beach to reef at Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area, kayak on some of the earth’s clearest waters at Turquoise Bay or at the right time of year, observe the mass hatching of the next generation of sea turtles.

This remote coastal settlement sees far less tourists pass through than its southern counterparts, but for those willing to make the journey, the astounding natural beauty that is Exmouth and its surroundings will certainly not disappoint.

Given its isolated position, the very best way to explore Exmouth at your own leisurely pace and time is with a hire car. So, grab the keys and sunscreen as we unpack what’s on offer at what may be Australia’s most seldom-visited coastline.

Wet & Wild

When visiting an area of such beauty, it’s sometimes not enough to just look. So why not take your hire car to the aforementioned Turquoise Bay and immerse yourself in one of WA’s best beaches. The beach and bay are renowned for their colourful wildlife and reefs, teaming with a variety of tropical species you’re encouraged to swim amongst.

Be sure to pack some food and drinks as there isn’t a great deal of amenities or vendors readily available, which all but adds to the appeal. Next, take your hire car to Paradise Beach, where just a short swim from the shore are gigantic coral formations rich with marine life.

When you’ve had your fill head back to your accommodation and shower off the day, ready to take your hire car to Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, a relic of the early 20th century. The Lighthouse is one of the best spots in Exmouth to wave goodbye to the day and watch the sun sink over the Indian Ocean.

As well as boasting its sunsets comprised of deep orange hues, the Lighthouse is  one of the few places in Australia where viewers can witness both sunrise and sunset, so come back in the morning for an equally sensational sight.

Cheers to That!

When you’ve said goodbye to the day, say hello to the night.

If you’re in the mood for music, swing by Cadillacs Bar & Grill, an American/Australian style country music venue. Chow down on some BBQ ribs, take in a tune and sink a beer amongst staff and patrons from the world over. Cadillacs is a fantastic fusion of both Aussie and American culture that’s remained a staple in Exmouth for some time.

Given its small population, it may surprise you to know that Exmouth also houses two breweries! Take your hire car to either Whalebone Brewing Company or Froth Craft Brewery to finish the day the Aussie way with a glass of ale, lager, pilsner and many more that are brewed fresh in Exmouth. The rustic style of both breweries is a testament to the rugged way of life in Exmouth, and both venues offer classic pub-style food to compliment the beverages on tap. They also both offer live music from local and travelling musicians, so if you dance the night away, just ensure you nominate a designated driver for your hire car!

With the unique experiences above just a taste of what’s on offer, visiting this area of Western Australia is sure to be remembered for a lifetime. Exmouth is a vacation off the beaten track, a true Aussie experience away from the throngs of manic tourists.

When you’re taking the road less travelled, you need a good set of wheels. Why not hire a car?
