Car Rental Cairns Central

Situated in far north Queensland, Cairns is considered the gateway to Australia’s world-renowned Great Barrier Reef. Boasting a warm tropical climate, sensational rainforests, and some of the world’s best day-ventures, you’ll want more than just a few days to soak up every corner of Cairns and its stunning surroundings. To make the very most of your time, pick up a hire car and explore this tropical paradise in your own time.

Explore rainforest villages in a hire car

No visit to Cairns would be complete without a visit to Kuranda, a picturesque haven nestled amongst verdant green flora. Situated just 25 kilometres north of Cairns central, take your hire car along the scenic route to Kuranda in just over 30 minutes before arriving in this colourful township. In fact, the drive from Cairns to Kuranda is an attraction in its own right, winding through the world heritage rainforests unique to this stunning part of Australia.

On arrival, park up and meander up and down the main road, where boutiques stocking hand-crafted goods are dotted amongst laidback-style cafes and restaurants. Here, a colourful infusion of flavours, colours and textures are made even more enjoyable alongside the sounds of buskers and the scents of essential oils.

Our top tip? Leave the hire car for an hour or two and venture down the Barron River on a guided riverboat. Operating since 1982, the Kuranda Riverboat tour is a relaxing 45-minute cruise set against a breathtaking backdrop. Common sights include freshwater crocodiles, water dragons, turtles, and an abundance of tropical bird species.

After your tour, refuel at Frogs Cafe, a local haunt frequented by tourists and residents alike. Choose from a selection of fresh Barramundi, emu, crocodile or kangaroo with one of the cafe’s famous tasting platters. Or, for those with a less adventurous palette, select from a more traditional range of curries, pizzas, salads, or burgers. Reserve a table outside and watch the water dragons play as you indulge in some of the region’s best cuisine.

A nocturnal wonderland awaits in Cairns central

As the sun falls, a bustling atmosphere awakens in Cairns central. Visit Cairns Night Market to pick up a few souvenirs for friends and family back home. Be spoilt for choice with stalls stocking both locally sourced and imported goods, from gemstone necklaces and crocodile leather, to beautiful paintings and hand-crafted homewares. Stop for a bite to eat at the street food court before continuing your evening adventure.

A stroll down the bar-lined esplanade at night is a must for couples and groups of friends seeking some excitement in Cairns. Brimming with overjoyed holidaymakers, choose from a selection of venues, each with their own alfresco-style arrangement allowing patrons to make the very best of the tropical conditions and stunning night sky as they sip on a refreshing cocktail. The Courtyard is one such locale, boasting a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. But, perhaps the biggest drawcard of this place is its quirky charm, made possible by the spirited staff and funky interior.

Finally, international visitors can’t overlook at least one round of pool at the infamous Downunder Bar. Situated in the convenience of Cairns Central, this novelty venue attracts people in droves during peak season. Book a table if the itinerary allows and be sure to nominate a designated driver before partaking in the festivities.

To end the night, take a stroll back towards the hire car along the well-lit foreshore as you reflect over tales from the evening, cementing lifelong memories that are certain to be recalled for years to come.
